South America Water from Space

Mini-Courses

Description of the Courses

Choice #1: Radar altimetry by Adrien Paris (LEGOS-HydroMatters, France)

For ~25-30 persons, session of 3h

Objectives:

Satellite radar altimetry is providing a new way to observe water levels of inland water bodies all over the world. Decades of research have fostered the use of such observation for near real time monitoring of inland waters, including lakes, large rivers and streams and ungaged small reaches. While several online databases provides freely available data updated on a daily basis thanks to automatic processing procedures, there is still the need of improving such automatic procedures and sometimes a manmade treatment is still necessary.
This small course will provide the necessary information for:
– finding the path to download the raw data to be processed and understand the availability of data in the area of interest;
– understanding the variables that can be used to discriminate water/nowater observations;
– handle the Altis free software to convert raw data into water levels time series.

 Additional information:

At least one PC (linux/windows) per two people could be good. Previous install of Altis (under Anaconda/Python environment) is preferable: information on installation can be found here: https://gitlab.com/ctoh/altis

Please contact Adrien Paris for inquiries regarding the installation issues. During the course, a dataset will be provided for example and processing; but everyone is free to previously download data on their area of interest here: http://ctoh.legos.obs-mip.fr/applications/land_surfaces/altimetric_data/altis/altis

It is also preferable to come with independant data (in situ for example) for comparison.

Choice #2: ADCP and field trip by Pablo Souza Dos Santos and ITAIPU’s hydrological studies team

For ~16 persons maximum, session of 3h

 Objectives:

The ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) operation course aims to demonstrate how a flow measurement is done in practice. The participants will work directly with the instruments for operating the data collection software. Data will be collected by the participants himself in a channel controlled by ITAIPU Binacional.

Additional information:

The ADCP course will be given at ITAIPU Binacional’s facilities. For logistics, the course is limited to a maximum of 16 people, so that everyone has contact with the equipment, performing at least 1 pair of flow measurements.

Requirements: Notions of hydrometry and fluviometry.

Choice #3: SWOT Hydrology-Toolbox and SWOT simulator by Damien Desroches (CNES, France)

For ~25-30 persons, session of 3h

 Objectives:

Swot-hydrology-toolbox is an open-source software that provides different tools for SWOT users. The purpose is to help scientists to play with simulated data and L2+ hydrological official processing chains. All generated products are in-line with official format and up-to-date with future SWOT processing chains. The different tools provided are:

  • SISIMP: Large scale simulator of L2_HR_PIXC products (SWOT “expert” product)
  • RiverObs : Generation of L2_HR_RiverTile, L2_HR_RiverSP products
  • LOCNES: Generation of L2_HR_LakeTile, L2_HR_LakeSP
  • L2_HR_PIXCVec products
  • Floodplain DEM prototype
  • During the course
  • We will check if installation procedure works well for users, and will present some work around if some users can’t install it (for example work directly on CNES cluster)
  • We will run the tutorial (a template dataset) and will modify it to match with another dataset (don’t hesitate to bring your own datasets !!).
  • We will analyze the different output and their particularities to avoid the first reefs when science users will use the real SWOT data

 Additional information:

The course will present how to install the simulator and use it for your own dataset. However, it is advice to install the software prior to the course. The installation procedure is explained here: https://github.com/CNES/swot-hydrology-toolbox.

Choice #4: Water Resources Applications by Rodrigo Pavia and a team from IPH-UFRGS

For ~25-30 persons, session of 3h

Objectives:

This short course will demonstrate a set of tools for water resources analyses based on multiple remote sensing products and hydrological models.

The tools include the: SARDIM-South America River Discharge Monitor, SACCI – South American Climate Change Impacts), SARTS – South America River Discharge Time Series, MGB hydrological model, Google Earth Engine Water Accounting (geeWA) and the GEE Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (GEE Sebal).

Additional information:

A computer is needed as well as an internet connection
